Free Will writing service

Why make a Will?

Making a Will is the best way of ensuring that your wishes are met, and the people and causes you care about are looked after.

What is the Free Will Service?

Writing or amending your Will need not be difficult or expensive. Guide Dogs offers a Free Will Service for our supporters and their partners. You can create or update a simple Will, free of charge, in person with a solicitor or by using an online Will writing service.

There’s no obligation to make a donation. But we would be extremely grateful if you could support us with a gift in your Will. A guide dog means freedom and independence for someone with sight loss and your legacy could ensure we continue to provide this precious gift.

How to use the Free Will Service

Face-to-face with a solicitor

This is run in partnership with the National Free Wills Network. We pay a special rate for a local solicitor to write a simple will. There is no cost to you. This is a service for people over 55 to have a simple Will written or updated, through a network of solicitors across the UK.

  1. To sign up for the Free Wills Network and receive a list of your local solicitors, please complete the form.
  2. Once you receive the form, please select a solicitor, from the list, and contact them directly to book an appointment at a time convenient for you.
  3. At the solicitor’s appointment, please remember to bring your declaration form enclosed in your pack.

Write your Will online

To help you get started with writing a Will from the comfort of your own home, we’ve teamed up with Bequeathed*, an online free Will writing service.

  2. Complete your online will in your own time, with expert support and guidance available throughout the process if you need help at any point.
  3. Once the system has generated your Will, simply download it and follow the instructions to sign it and have it witnessed.

If you find your Will is more complicated and you want to take legal advice, just ask Bequeathed to refer you to one of their partner law firms. You can agree a fee to complete your will over the phone or face to face with a solicitor.

A simple Will is determined by each solicitor’s firm. If your Will exceeds this simple criteria as defined by the solicitor, they will discuss a fee with you before proceeding.

No. Your Will is your business so it’s entirely up to you whether you choose to leave us a gift or not.

If you use our face-to-face service, via the National Free Wills Network, we will be notified of your gift in Will by your solicitor. If you use our online service, via Bequeathed, we won’t know you have left a gift unless you give permission to inform us – or until the time comes for your Will to be read. Whatever option you choose, we always love to hear from supporters so we can thank you for your gift and stay in touch.

Including a gift to Guide Dogs in your Will does not make it a binding commitment while you are still alive. You can change your mind and amend your Will again at any time.

Yes, you can use your own solicitor to draw up your Will, although it’s unlikely to be free to do so. Simply tell them you want to include a gift to Guide Dogs in your Will and they will arrange it for you. Once completed, we would be grateful if you could let us know so that we can thank you by please calling 0800 953 0113 or emailing If you have already written a Will and would like to leave a gift, you can create a codicil with your solicitor, which simply allows you to update part of your Will.

Not at all. Rather than rewriting everything you can instruct a solicitor from the National Free Wills Network to add an amendment to your existing Will – which they will then prepare (You currently cannot amend or update a current Will via our online service).
